Marovic and Gabriel opened up the space a bit by removing service and storage areas. Nautical touches like ship’s wheel accents have been added, along with driftwood paneling. Preppy plaids in mix matched patterns cover the chairs and banquettes. Don’t beer taste in an industrial dump with no atmosphere and sketchy food trucks.

Gets better all the time with Helmsman Ale House opening in August (exact date still to be announced) on Balboa Peninsula just across the street from Arc Butcher & Baker. Chef Zach explained that Helmsman is a brewpub and he wanted the food to reflect that. He wanted the dishes to be approachable and fun, and he wants people to really enjoy what they’re eating. But most importantly, he wants people to know where they actually are. I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to try their handcrafted beers prepared by head brewer Dylan Mobley.

Artfully inspired, the menu by Executive Chef, Zach Scherer, is a refreshing extension of classic pub fare with vibrant California and coastal flavors. The burger, however, was just another bar burger, kind of forgettable despite the fancy bibb lettuce, grilled onions, house sauce, tomato and American cheese. It’s all tucked inside a glossy brioche bun that’s labeled as vegan. And if you opt to have the dry-aged beef patty cooked any degree above medium, you might even say it’s tough. Light and reedy, they’re the best part of not only the burger plate, but also the chicken schnitzel.

So far, Mobley has made five house beers, including an oyster stout the color of motor oil that involved 20 pounds of East Coast oysters. Beers from craft breweries near and far fill in the rest of a draft-beer roster that changes from day to day. Another fabulous brunch item is their gorgeous Chilaquiles which also happen to be a favorite dish of mine. This dish features a house-made Guajillo sauce, pickled red onions, cotija cheese, scallions, avocado mash, topped with a fried egg.
