Drive with Michelin®'s latest generation of all-season tire technology, providing steady traction in dry and wet conditions for year-round performance. It’s why we put more science into our tires, minimizing the trade-offs and maximizing performance. So you can get the signature performance you want most without giving up the others in the process. That’s MICHELIN® Total Performance™.
Your Tires Matter. So Count On Cooper®
The beginnings of Cooper date back to 1914 in Akron, Ohio, when two brothers-in-law John F. Schaefer and Claude E. Hart formed a company to produce tire patches, tire cement, and tire repair kits. In 1915, Schaefer and Hart purchased The Giant Tire & Rubber Company of Akron, a tire rebuilding business, and shortly thereafter moved the business to Findlay, Ohio. We want you to be 100% satisfied with your MICHELIN® passenger or light truck replacement tires so they are backed by the MICHELIN® Promise Plan™.

Could you live in a home made of tires and beer bottles?.
And it’s why you’ll see the same technology that helps us win the most grueling endurance races make its way into our street tires. That’s because MICHELIN® recognizes that you need it all from your tires — safety, a comfortable ride, fuel efficiency, grip and control, toughness, and more. Many of those performances naturally compete, and increasing one tends to decrease another. That’s not acceptable at MICHELIN®.

Marovic and Gabriel opened up the space a bit by removing service and storage areas. Nautical touches like ship’s wheel accents have been added, along with driftwood paneling. Preppy plaids in mix matched patterns cover the chairs and banquettes. Don’t beer taste in an industrial dump with no atmosphere and sketchy food trucks.
So far, Mobley has made five house beers, including an oyster stout the color of motor oil that involved 20 pounds of East Coast oysters. Beers from craft breweries near and far fill in the rest of a draft-beer roster that changes from day to day. Another fabulous brunch item is their gorgeous Chilaquiles which also happen to be a favorite dish of mine. The new owners are building a 15-barrel brew house with the capacity to create a dozen or so small-batch beers at a time. There will be 14 beers on tap with house signature styles, rotating seasonal offerings and popular guest brewery selections. There will also be a full bar with signature cocktails and a wine list. Dine and drink in full view of our brewhouse, while taking in the fragrant aroma of brewing hops from our locally-brewed Newport Beach craft beers. The casual atmosphere, replete with seafaring décor, is perfect for all occasions and celebrations with varied types of seating from comfy booths, communal tables and traditional high tops. There’s also not one, but two large bars to quench your thirst from on some of the best mixed-drinks, wine, and craft beer in the Newport Beach area.

And when you’re feeling nostalgic for pickled eggs—the most iconic bar food of all—there’s not just one way to take it, but two. For the reasonable price of $4, Helmsman offers them deviled, an idea whose time has come, with the halved whites pink-hued and acting as rafts for a piped-in yolk that’s bright and spicy. But the old Newport Beach Brewing space—with 4,200 square feet and the capacity to produce about a dozen craft beers—represents something new for the company. Here, Marovic and crew are not only serving alcohol, but they’re also creating it. To do the job at the 15-barrel facility, Marovic and Gabriel hired brewmaster Dylan Mobley, who was previously at Stone Brewing Co., Angel City Brewery and Bottle Logic Brewing.
Both new customers and Newport Beach Brewing’s regulars can feel at ease. This is a place where you play a round of darts, then eat a burger or fish and chips, all with a frosty glass of beer in hand. In fact, you can still get an oversized pretzel just as you could at the old place.
In addition to our flagship and wide-ranging seasonal house beer, we offer a full bar with cocktails, wine, and curated list of guest brewery selections. Artfully inspired, the menu by Executive Chef, Zach Scherer, is a refreshing extension of classic pub fare with vibrant California and coastal flavors. The burger, however, was just another bar burger, kind of forgettable despite the fancy bibb lettuce, grilled onions, house sauce, tomato and American cheese. It’s all tucked inside a glossy brioche bun that’s labeled as vegan. And if you opt to have the dry-aged beef patty cooked any degree above medium, you might even say it’s tough. Light and reedy, they’re the best part of not only the burger plate, but also the chicken schnitzel.

Gets better all the time with Helmsman Ale House opening in August (exact date still to be announced) on Balboa Peninsula just across the street from Arc Butcher & Baker. Chef Zach explained that Helmsman is a brewpub and he wanted the food to reflect that. He wanted the dishes to be approachable and fun, and he wants people to really enjoy what they’re eating. But most importantly, he wants people to know where they actually are. I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to try their handcrafted beers prepared by head brewer Dylan Mobley.

The White House banned trans influencer Rose Montoya on Tuesday after she sparked a firestorm after posting a video showing her briefly going topless during a Pride event at the White House over the weekend. Many online took screenshots and snippets of Montoya's video and shared them on their own social media accounts in apparent outrage. Some called the display of nudity disrespectful while others labeled it "disgraceful."

Don’t be surprised if you get asked to buy a dancer a drink either—and don’t be fooled into thinking that drink will get you a discount in the lap dance department. That being said, courting a dancer with drinks and tips, and probably more tips, could lead to a more, ahem, engaging experience. In a statement to The Post on Tuesday, a White House spokesperson said she flouted basic etiquette and is persona non grata at future events. Model Rose Montoya apologized for taking off her top at a White House LGBTQ Pride event in a new video shared online. Montoya acknowledged the criticism on Friday and apologized to LGBTQ people who faced harassment as a result of the video. However, before coming out as trans, it was not,” she added, seemingly oblivious to the fact that it would also be a breach of decorum for a man to remove his shirt at an executive mansion function.

Montoya, 27 — who was barred from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue following backlash from the flashing, which a White House spokesperson described as “inappropriate and disrespectful” — apologized for her behavior in a three-minute video on Twitter. "Last but not least I'd like to apologize to the president, the White House and the nation. It was also never my intention to create a situation that would lead to harassment and harm of myself and others," Montoya said. "Moving forward I am committed to using this moment as a catalyst for creating positive change within myself and within the broader community and world at large." Montoya, who uses she/they pronouns, has not publicly commented on the White House’s decision to ban her from future events, but defended herself on social media from the growing backlash Monday.

"It was unfair to the hundreds of attendees who were there to celebrate their families," she continued. "So, you know, we're going to continue to be clear on that. … It's not appropriate. It's disrespectful. And let's not -- it really does not reflect the event that we hosted to celebrate the LGBTQ+ families." The spokeswoman said Montoya and the two other topless guests in her video would not be invited to future White House events. Among the attendees was Montoya, a transgender rights activist who rose to prominence in 2021 for her educational social-media content about trans issues. On social media, Montoya, whose Instagram biography identifies her as an educator, model and actor, called the video an act of joy in celebrating the transgender community. “Individuals in the video certainly will not be invited to future events,” the press secretary said.

Ms Montoya posted a 58-second video of the White House event which included a moment where she is seen topless, with her hands over her chest, next to two shirtless trans men. Following uproar from conservatives, who Montoya says are trying to use her clip as an example that the transgender community “grooms” young people, the model made a response video, pointing out that being topless is not against the law in Washington, DC. On Friday, Montoya posted a video on TikTok where she said she was sorry for baring her breasts at the event, which was intended to show the administration’s support of the LGBTQ+ community. Toward the end of the video, a voice asks, “Are we topless at the White House? ” It cuts to two transgender men flanking Montoya, shirtless, posing for the camera in front of the building. Montoya is also topless, revealing her breasts, though she covers her nipples with her hands.

MORE: 'Genocidal': Transgender people begin to flee states with anti-LGBTQ laws
This year, at least 525 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced and at least 78 have been enacted by state lawmakers across 41 states, according to the Human Rights Campaign, a group advocating for such rights. Of those bills, more than 220 pieces of legislation explicitly target transgender people. Rose Montoya, a trans woman, influencer and advocate, was one of those banned after posting a video on social media. Pride Month is being celebrated at a time when anti-transgender sentiment is rising in the United States, and brands including Target are facing boycotts over their Pride marketing and LGBTQ+ products. In a new video she shared on Instagram, Montoya — who is also a model — apologized and vowed to articulate "trans joy in a more effective way."

They condemned Biden for his support of Israel’s military campaign and Western news outlets for what they said was undercoverage and misrepresentation of the conflict. “THOUSANDS of trans activists (like myself) have worked for decades, to show transgender people in a POSITIVE light to society, and you go and TEAR IT ALL DOWN, in one day?? ” a mental-toughness trainer named Robin St Louis told Montoya with a crying emoji.
The individuals in the video won't be invited to future events, Jean-Pierre said. "Trans rights are human rights," Montoya said in the clip while shaking Biden's hand. Near the end of the video, Montoya was shown walking toward the White House and going topless on the South Lawn as her hands covered her breasts.
The truth is, news costs money to produce, and we are proud that we have never put our stories behind an expensive paywall. She explained that she hadn’t planned to bare her chest at the event but joined the moment spontaneously. He also had a message for "the entire community," but particularly for transgender youth. At the Pride event, President Biden spoke out against anti-LGBTQ legislation being introduced and passed in various state legislatures around the country.
Images and footage of a topless Montoya covering her breasts with her hands circled social media soon after the event. The spokesperson said that her actions were "not reflective of the event we hosted to celebrate LGBTQI+ families or the other hundreds of guests who were in attendance" and that "Individuals in the video will not be invited to future events." The White House called the incident “inappropriate and disrespectful” and said it’s “not reflective of the event we hosted to celebrate LGBTQI+ families” or other guests. "In a quick moment of fleeting and overwhelming trans joy, I decided to do something unbecoming of a guest of the president at the White House lawn celebration," she said.

More than 1,000 LGBTQ+ people, their families, and allies attended the outdoor soiree. At another point, the video shows Montoya and other individuals bearing their chests while posing in front of the White House South Portico. The Bidens welcomed hundreds of LGBTQ families from across the country on Saturday to mark Pride month. The administration described the event as the largest-ever Pride celebration at the White House. Montoya, a transgender woman, is holding her breasts in that part of the video, but another person who is apparently a transgender man is showing off his mastectomy scars while flexing. Montoya's video drew fierce backlash from conservatives online, but her decision to go topless also upset some supporters of LGBTQ+ rights.

The beers are dirt cheap—a PBR will run you $3.50, and pitchers of various drafts range from $8.75 to $12.75—and just about everyone seems to be a regular. The dancers aren’t the fanciest, but are eclectic and range in age and body types; a voluptuous performer might use the stage for some R&B hip thrusting and ass jiggling, followed by some jaw-dropping pole twirling to Slipknot from a dancer with less bod, more ’tude. Overall, the atmosphere is lighthearted and fun with everyone in the small bar applauding each other’s sets. The girls usually recognize faces in the crowd and will chat at length with patrons. In an evening dedicated in large part to journalism, O’Donnell cited journalists who have been detained across the world, including Americans Evan Gershkovich in Russia and Austin Tice, who is believed to be held in Syria. Families of both men were in attendance as they have been at previous dinners. An election-year roast of President Biden before journalists, celebrities and politicians at the annual White House correspondents’ dinner Saturday butted up against growing public discord over the Israel-Hamas war, with large protests outside the event.
"My transmasculine friends are showing off their top surgery scars and living in joy, and I wanted to join them. And because it is perfectly within the law in Washington, D.C., I decided to join them and cover my nipples just to play it safe." “In a quick moment of fleeting and overwhelming trans joy, I decided to do something unbecoming of a guest of the president at the White House lawn celebration,” she said. Rose Montoya, a transgender activist and social media influencer, will not be invited back to the White House after she posted a video of herself topless with two shirtless trans men at last weekend’s White House Pride Month celebration. "My trans masculine friends were showing off their top surgery scars and living in joy, and I wanted to join them," she said in the video.
A transgender influencer and activist has hit back after a TikTok video that showed her topless during a Pride Month celebration at the White House sparked outrage. The Biden administration weighed in on the matter on Tuesday, saying that Montoya and the other people included in her video would be banned from future events organized at the White House. The transgender activist who went viral for posing topless at a recent White House event apologized Friday. To get inside Saturday’s dinner, some guests had to hurry through hundreds of protesters outraged over the mounting humanitarian disaster for Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
The guests’ dressiness made for a striking contrast with protesters who gathered outside to confront the mix of politicians, media types and A-list celebrities about the war in Gaza. Although the event is lovingly referred to as the “Nerd Prom,” classic prom dresses and ruffle-collared frocks had no place on this red carpet, or on the sidewalks outside, as a flurry of attendees made their way into the event. Montoya ended the address by affirming her commitment to using the media kerfuffle as a “catalyst to create positive change” for herself and other trans individuals. "Trans rights are human rights," Montoya says in the video while she shakes Biden's hand. Montoya's comments came shortly after many conservatives criticized a video in which she was seen topless at the White House for a Pride Month celebration.
Shortly afterward, she posted a video on Instagram that showed a clip of her standing in front of the White House topless as she covered her nipples with her hands. "It has recently come to my attention that conservatives are trying to use the video of me topless at the White House to try to call the community groomers, etc.," Montoya said in a video posted to TikTok. Images and footage circling social media show trans model Rose Montoya topless, covering her breasts with her hands, during a LGBTQ Pride month celebration hosted by the administration on Saturday in Washington D.C. Among the attendees was Montoya, a transgender rights activist who rose to prominence in 2021 for her educational social media content about transgender issues. On Monday, Montoya posted a video to her Instagram and TikTok accounts, recapping the White House picnic.
"This is trans joy. We're here at the white house unapologetically trans, queer, and brown." “Going topless in DC is legal, and I fully support the movement to free the nipples. However, before coming out as trans, it was not,” she says in the response video, which has since been deleted.
The video then shifts to Montoya dancing with the transgender flag, standing next to others at the event and posing for photos and then, finally, Montoya standing alongside several others, topless, in front of the White House. Rose Montoya, a transgender woman, shared a video she filmed from Saturday's event with her TikTok followers. “More so than ever before I have learned how powerful and just how impactful my actions are,” she said in her apology video. “I also feel energized to educate and articulate to others the importance and power of trans joy in a more effective way,” she added. The debate around equalizing nudity laws across genders — sometimes called the “Free the Nipple” movement — has been growing in the United States.
All you’re doing is saying that trans women are women because for some reason, people like to sexualise women’s bodies and say that they’re inappropriate. Montoya's video drew fierce backlash from conservatives online, but Montoya's decision to go topless also upset some supporters of LGBTQ+ rights. Hundreds of guests were in attendance at the event, which the White House said was the largest Pride party ever hosted at the official home and office of the president. "The topless video took place after the majority of people had cleared out, as no one else is present in the video besides the topless people," one Twitter user wrote.
When Miss Froy disappears, and no one but Amanda has any recollection of her, the heiress enlists a photographer (Elliott Gould) to back her up in uncovering the truth behind the missing woman. Perhaps the most famous episode in Hammer House of Horror, thanks to its delightfully over-the-top centerpiece scene, is also one of its very best. “The House That Bled to Death” follows the classic “family buys a house with a dark past because it’s cheap” formula, then twists it in wonderfully ironic ways that fit the darkly comic aesthetic of some of the best Hammer stories.

There was something in the water in the filmmaking community at this time that has been elusive ever since, where even the nastiest material could be directed with a flourish that would send it down smoothly. Brenda (Rita Tushingham), an author of children's books living at home with her mother, decides to venture out to London and find a father for the child she is not yet pregnant with, but is determined to have. She meets Peter (Shane Briant), a sociopath preying on the city's women who lures Brenda into his bloody game of deceit. Penny Appleby (Susan Strasberg) returns to her father's home on the French Riviera, only to find her stepmother (Ann Todd) making excuses for his absence. After Penny spots her father's dead body, only for it to vanish later, she enlists the help of the family's driver (Ronald Lewis) to help her crack the case.

The Mummy is an exceedingly elegant and creepy horror picture that seamlessly blends its action and adventure elements. Hammer's final release during its peak period was this Anthony Page-directed, made-for-television remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1938 film. Cybill Shepherd stars as Amanda, an American heiress on a cross-country train trip in pre-war Nazi Germany, who befriends a kind older woman, Miss Froy (Angela Lansbury), during the journey.

Hammer House of Horror - Series 1 - Episode 1 - ITVX
Box office, but Hammer was unable to capitalise on them as most of the profits went to other financial backers. Towards the end of 1951, the one-year lease on Down Place expired, and with its growing success Hammer looked towards more conventional studio-based productions. A dispute with the Association of Cinematograph Technicians blocked this proposal, and the company purchased the freehold of Down Place instead.
Creepy kids are very often a winning formula in horror, and they work well in at least one other Hammer House of Horror episode, as we’ll soon see. “Growing Pains,” though, is a case of both too much going on in a single episode, and not enough simple horror pleasure to be found in the core concept. The episode follows a married couple who adopt a young boy after the death of their son, and the boy’s detached and peculiar demeanor soon leads to strange happenings around the house. Even the obtuse theme music, which starts with a stab of dramatic drums before going into an unexpectedly major-key guitar line that sounds like a Wall’s Viennetta advertisement, adds to the show’s out-of-tune style. That kind of says it all – none of it’s quite right.” He points to his favourite episode, The Two Faces of Evil, to illustrate. A family are involved in a car crash that leaves the father disfigured, with bandages covering his face.
Indeed, behind-the-scenes problems led to significant alterations to the overall film. Originally, Cary Grant had reached out to Hammer about starring in one of their upcoming films. Grant had been so impressed by Fisher's work on The Curse of Frankenstein and Horror of Dracula that he wished to work specifically with the director, and so Hammer went about crafting a script. The result of this was a draft of Phantom in which each role was written to potentially appeal to Grant himself, who ended up not taking any of the parts after his agent talked him out of doing a low-budget horror flick. Hammer then had a script on its hands of such cost that the only way to make a profit was to release the film with an A rating, which would allow children of all ages as long as anyone under 12 were accompanied by an adult. Almost immediately, bits and pieces of Guest's film were regurgitated into American films, to say nothing of the countless British knock-offs.
Several Hammer House of Horror episodes follow the “person is driven mad by events they can’t explain or control” formula, but “Visitor from the Grave” is by far the most unpleasant. Created by Roy Skeggs after years of false starts for Hammer on the television front, Hammer House of Horror was devised as a way to tell contemporary stories with a classic Hammer feel. Edwyn lives with his cranky-natured mother (Annie Dyson), with a pretty estranged tenant lady Stella (Georgina Hale) and her baby as their neighbour. He visits a rector, Father Macintosh (Antony Brown), for advice, but runs away when he sees 9 mentioned as the date of service.

She advises going to police but Harry refuses as his rifle was unlicensed and Penny may "land back in the asylum". He buries Charlie in the woods and disposes of Charlie's Range Rover into the lake nearby, and they remove all evidence of the incident. The local policeman arrives, saying that Charlie has been missing for two days, and is questioning Harry because of a disagreement the two of them had in a pub. Chuck Spillers (Brian Cox), after serving two years for burglary, is released from prison with the help of an elderly pet shop owner Martin Blueck (Peter Cushing), who also gives him money and offers him a job in his shop. To save Sarah and himself, the remaining two people in the photograph, Graham goes to Heinz Hoffman (Marius Goring), his uncle's art dealer, who first told them about Charlie Boy at the mansion.
Horror of Dracula (
In America, eight episodes from the series were broadcast as four made-for-television films consisting of twinned episodes along with new segment introduction footage provided by actors Patrick McGoohan, Sebastian Cabot and Joan Crawford serving as hosts. The series was first aired on ABC from 26 September, 1968 to 30 January, 1969, prior to broadcast in the UK on ITV in 1969. Hammer's horror films featured many actors who appeared repeatedly in a number of movies, forming an informal "Hammer repertory company". Terence Fisher's version of Gaston Leroux's novel (with a screenplay by John Elder) was not received well critically or financially at the time of its release.
In the U.S., A&E Home Entertainment, under license from Carlton International Media Limited, released the complete series on Region 1 DVD in 2001. Edwyn wakes up in the hospital, and is told by Harris and Dr Manders that he had an attack of severe delusion of persecution, and now he is better as he has responded to medication. They decide to send him back to his old job as an operation theatre assistant. Edwyn hears on the radio of three nurses who have died by an undiagnosed viral infection of the brain in the country. Back home he finds Stella, but is reminded of his mother and sees her body in the freezer, after which he again develops delusions. Newly appointed morgue worker Edwyn Bord (Peter McEnery) becomes obsessed with the number 9, which is being often repeated to him in his everyday interactions with people and experiences.
In 2010, Hammer revitalized itself as a new name in the horror game and released Matt Reeves' acclaimed Let Me In, soon followed by the Daniel Radcliffe-led remake of The Woman in Black. Hammer's most recent release was Doctor Jekyll, featuring Eddie Izzard as Dr. Nina Jekyll (and her alter ego, Rachel Hyde) in a modern retelling of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson story, which premiered at London's FrightFest in August 2023. With any luck, Hammer will continue its reign of terror for decades to come. This site is my homage to the series where you will find information on each episode, plus filming locations and other items of interest related to the filming of the series.
Also in 1951, Hammer and Exclusive signed a four-year production and distribution contract with Robert Lippert, an American film producer. It was for The Last Page that Hammer made a significant appointment when they hired film director Terence Fisher, who played a critical role in the forthcoming horror cycle. In many ways, Horror of Dracula (or simply Dracula abroad) is the film that made Hammer's name. It certainly buttered the studio's bread for many years to come, along with Cushing's Frankenstein series.
Shenley and Lolly go to another apartment to discuss another sale, where they find that the place is desolate and is being demolished, with them stuck in it. During the surgery, performed by Rayburn, Emily and Lolly, Shenley dies and is put in the mortuary—at which point he wakes up again beside his sleeping wife, after his fifth nightmare. Film music composer David Winter (Jon Finch) lives with his actress wife Mary (Prunella Gee) in a secluded farmhouse.

When he returns to the house, he and Sarah hear howling coming from the woods. Later that night in their room, Sarah is horrified when she sees the face of a werewolf at the window. Finding their bedroom door locked, Tom climbs out of the window to investigate, but falls while climbing the drainpipe. Meanwhile, the werewolf enters their bedroom through the house and attacks Sarah as Mrs Ardoy and the children watch in delight. In the latter part of the 1970s, Hammer made fewer films, and attempts were made to break away from the then-unfashionable Gothic horror films on which the studio had built its reputation.

William and Emma Peters (Nicholas Ball and Rachel Davies) move into a house with their young daughter Sophia, but are apparently unaware of its history. Powers (Milton Johns), but the house was the site of a gruesome murder in the 1950s when an elderly man poisoned and hacked his wife to death. Soon, strange happenings begin, with creepy noises, doors that shut and do not open, leaking gas pipes, the appearance of bloodstains on walls, and even the slaughter of Sophia's pet cat by an unknown force.
The House That Bled to Death
Chuck goes back inside the store to confront Martin, but he finds that a black panther has managed to exit its cage and has cornered Martin who ends up falling into the cell himself via the trapdoor. Chuck and Annie return home, but on entering their house, the door shuts and the walls become electrified. Martin had wired the place during his visit and perhaps purposefully allowed them to escape as part of his experiments. The story ends with Chuck and Annie confined within their isolated house shouting desperately for help, and Martin trapped in his shop's basement—in each case, with no one to hear their screams. When Chuck doesn't come home, Annie goes to the pet shop but Martin says he hasn't seen him.

A mother of three children under four years old was met with a “terrifying” surprise after she and her husband investigated why a handful of bees had flown into the attic of the couple’s North Carolina home. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee appeared in none of the Mummy sequels, which had stories and characters unrelated to the 1959 film and all three were relegated to second feature status, as by the mid-1960s, Hammer's films were often intended for double features. Often two films would be shot back-to-back with the same sets and costumes to save money, and then each film would be shown on a separate double feature to prevent audiences noticing any recycling, as for example in The Plague of the Zombies and The Reptile (both 1966). The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb supported the slightly more prestigious The Gorgon, whilst The Mummy's Shroud was a second feature for Frankenstein Created Woman. "Because of the fantastic business done world-wide by Hammer's Technicolor version of Dracula, Universal-International, its distributors, have made over to Jimmy Carreras' organisation, the remake rights to their entire library of classic films." The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas is not available to watch or rent.

David is upset because he knows Mary is having an affair with someone; unbeknownst to him this is his own psychiatrist, Dr Charles (Ian McCulloch). One night during a storm, when Mary is away, a young woman named Lucinda Jessop (Patricia Quinn) appears in the farmhouse stable. She tells David she is a witch from the 17th century and has used her powers to travel in time to the 20th century in order to escape from witch hunters who wanted to burn her at the stake at the very same farmhouse.
Janet wakes up in hospital unharmed with her son, and is told that Martin underwent emergency neck surgery and cannot talk for the time being. The local policeman questions Janet, who says she can't remember anything after the crash, but that the attacker had long nails on his right hand. She is then told that the attacker was killed in the crash and his right hand is missing, hence the nails can't be seen for identification. After Penny's body is taken away by the medics, Gupta takes off his disguise, Charlie reappears in person, and they begin celebrating their "success" with Harry and Margaret.
The Man Who Could Cheat Death
With a cast including Diana Dors, Peter Cushing and even the future James Bond Pierce Brosnan, the horrors played out in a world of everyday people, provincial English towns, smoking in pubs, creaky village antique shops, regional accents and full-English breakfasts. This was not even the climax of The House That Bled to Death, part of British horror studio Hammer’s TV venture, Hammer House of Horror. That would come when the truth about the birthday girl’s duplicitous parents was revealed – and, indeed, they got their reward. But it was this bloody scene that would become, for many, the defining memory of one of the creepiest programmes ever shown on British television. Forty years ago this month, ITV broadcast a children’s birthday party that no one in attendance would forget. As a group of kids gathered on screen for jelly and games, a torrent of brilliant red Kensington gore suddenly came from above, soaking everything and everyone in the room.
She notices Chuck's coat at the store and immediately goes to the local police but they simply advise her to wait a while longer for his return before they act. Annie investigates the store at night and finds Chuck trapped in the cell, and runs to seek help. It is revealed that Martin is a former Nazi concentration camp official conducting bizarre experiments on human beings and animals, and wanted to use Chuck as a human subject. Annie returns to help Chuck but is pushed into the cell by Martin, who closes the trapdoor.
He investigates, and discovers a web of sex, incest, and Satanic possession. The film was an enormous success, not only in Great Britain, but also in the U.S., where it inspired numerous imitations from, amongst others, Roger Corman and American International Pictures (with their series largely based on Edgar Allan Poe – the so-called "Poe Cycle"). It found success on the European continent also, where Italian directors and audiences were particularly receptive. The project was handed to Tony Hinds, who was less impressed with the script than Michael Carreras, and whose vision for the film was a simple black-and-white 'quickie' made in three weeks. Concerned that Subotsky and Rosenberg's script had too many similarities to the Universal films, Hinds commissioned Jimmy Sangster to rewrite it as The Curse of Frankenstein. Sangster's treatment impressed Hammer enough to rescue the film from the 'quickie' treadmill and to produce it as a colour film.
The look of shock and upset on the faces of the children invites questions as to exactly how much they – or their parents, for that matter – knew about how the scene would unfold. Listening to them crying, it would have surely been less traumatic had the woman playing mother gone up in a blaze while lighting the candles on the cake. It describes how neglected he felt, his parents seemingly having been too busy with their work to devote any attention to him. William's ghost then appears to his parents in the lab, telling them how he was saddened as they neglected him in the midst of their busy schedules, prioritising work over him. He kills a valued rabbit and runs away with Terence's prized plant, the basis of his years of work. Terence chases after him, despite Laurie's warning, and they reach the cemetery.
Harry and Margaret are actually lovers, Gupta and the policeman were the same person - an actor named Richard (Gareth Thomas), and Charlie never actually died. The whole thing was a set-up concocted by the four of them to grab Penny's wealth. They had arranged for Charles to attack Penny and get shot by blanks; Charles enacted his ghostly appearances with make-up, and Harry manipulated Penny's existing instability. They find the £150,000 in cash that Penny meant to pay the 'Swami' with, but as they start to divide the money, darkness befalls and Penny's ghost - a real ghost - appears before them.
